We use a lot of online services every day: from mail and social networks to forums and e-banking. Every system requires creating a separate account and coming up with a password, so remembering a multitude of passwords has become a necessity for each Internet user nowadays. The more passwords you have, the more difficult it is to remember them all. Using one and the same password for every occasion is quite dangerous, since this will make it easier for hackers to access all your accounts by only cracking one. This task can effectively be performed by the so-called password managers - the programs that safely store your passwords. Once you install one of them, you will only need one password - the one from your password manager! That is why the program we will devote our post to today is called LastPass.

LastPass is a free program that allows to generate, store and manage all of your passwords. It is simple and reliable, and it works with all browsers and operational systems. LastPass is a local password manager that stores the data in the cloud, which means that your passwords database is deciphered locally and is stored in the cloud. All your passwords will only be available via the local deciphers, or after entering the protected website LastPass. Using LastPass, you will never have to worry about creating and storing a reliable password! LastPass is available for Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and WebOS.

Since a lot of websites with freeware try to bundle their downloads with add-ons and toolbars, it is important, firstly, to know the clean links to such freeware, and secondly, if you have already downloaded software with 'surprises' from one of the web portals, to learn how to remove those unwanted add-ons. Read on!

Now a tad more about using the program. All you need to do so that to start using LastPass is to create a free account: for this, go to website and download the software specifically for your device. Follow the steps suggested by the installation wizard, and very soon you will have LastPass installed on your device! When offered to create an account, type in your email address and come up with one single password - from now on, this will be the only password you will have to store in your memory and use it for the access into your web-treasury. Make sure your password is strong enough! And if you lose your LastPass password, it is a big problem, so better use the phrases and numbers combinations that you can memorize, or make sure you write down your password on paper and remember where you put it.

LastPass will enable you to import all your passwords from web browsers into LastPass, and it will save you a lot of troubles if you do so. Even if you used one and the same password for all of your websites, LastPass will create a list of already visited websites, so later you can come back and change your passwords. After you have installed LastPass, start one of the browsers, and you will notice the grey sign of LastPass (shaped as an asterisk). After you have signed into your account using email and LastPass password, the asterisk will become red. When you press on the logo of LastPass, you can see the menu from which you can change the settings. From now on, LastPass will automatically determine when you visit the website you have already created a password-protected account for, and offer you to generate new passwords for the new websites you need an account for.

Finally, let us say that LastPass is an amazing program that will make your life so much easier! But you should be aware of one small thing: the URL of the websites that you visit can be available to LastPass, and the reason why they do it can be clear after reading their Privacy Statement: “LastPass may collect aggregated statistics about the behavior of visitors to its websites. For instance, LastPass may monitor the most popular website account on the site. LastPass may display this information publicly or provide it to others. In addition, LastPass may use your behavioral data and other data you provide to LastPass to customize advertisements on its site to its users. In this way we try to keep the majority of our services free. However, LastPass does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below”.

Therefore, it is possible that the information about what websites you are registered in can be used by LastPass for creating your profile and show you certain ads. But this is, unfortunately, the reality of today’s life: we are constantly being screened for what we might need to buy and where, and even the most respectable Internet companies do it to their customers. Simply decide for yourself what you need to buy and what is totally unnecessary, and it will save you a lot of money and nerves!
